Mendeley Cite - Citation add-in for Microsoft® Word

Mendeley Cite is compatible with Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Word versions 2016 and above and with the Microsoft Word app for iPad®. If you are using an earlier version of Word, you can use the existing Mendeley Citation Plugin for Word available with Mendeley Desktop. Find out more here.

Mendeley Cite can:

  • Cite without having Mendeley Desktop open or even installed, minimizing potential performance loss
  • Keep your document in view as you cite: Mendeley Cite opens as a separate panel in Word alongside your document window, not over it, so your whole document remains visible as you find, select and insert references

Features:

  • Once you sign in to Mendeley Cite, your Mendeley library is downloaded from the cloud, so you don't need to have Mendeley Desktop open or even installed to use it

Note - To use Mendeley Cite you'll need a free Mendeley account, available from www.mendeley.com. You can also set up an account through the add-on.

Getting Started with Mendeley Cite

Insert citations

Position the cursor where you want to insert a citation in your document. Now go to the Mendeley Cite add-in window.

On the 'References' tab in Mendeley Cite select the check box of the reference(s) you wish to insert.

Select ‘Insert citation’ to insert the reference into your document. If you wish to insert multiple references, simply select more tick boxes. The citation will automatically update with the correct formatting.

Edit a Citation in your Word document

To edit references within a citation you have already created, position the cursor on the citation you want to edit and click to select it.
In the edit panel of Mendeley Cite, you can now see your selected citation. You can now select the reference pill you wish to edit to open the attributes panel.

Create a bibliography with Mendeley Cite

After you have inserted one or more citations you can use Mendeley Cite to automatically create a bibliography of all the references you’ve cited. Position the cursor where you want the bibliography to appear in your document and go to the Mendeley Cite add-in window. Select the 'three radio buttons' located on the top right hand side menu and select the ‘Insert Bibliography’ button in the drop down menu.

Be sure to proofread all your citations!

Citation tools, such as Mendeley, are not fool proof. Errors in capitalization are common.

Insert footnote citations

New Release Fall 2023

Footnotes citation styles have been released in Mendeley Cite! Users are now able to insert footnote citations into their Word documents via Mendeley Cite. 

Some citation styles have citations added at the bottom of the document page as a footnote, these styles include:

  • Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition (full note),
  • Modern Language Association 6th Edition (note),
  • OSCOLA (Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities)

Footnote citations can now be inserted using Mendeley Cite.

How do I insert footnote citations into my document? 

Users can insert footnote citations into their document in the same way they would in-text citations.

Open Mendeley Cite  in MS Word and select ‘Citation Settings’ and then select ‘Change citation style’. 

Search for and select your chosen citation style, such as Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition (full note).

E​​​ither select the references you would like to insert and insert your chosen citations by selecting ‘insert # citations’ in the pop-up at the bottom of the add-in

In Word desktop, the footnote citation will appear at the bottom of the document page but in Word for the web, the footnote citation will appear upon selecting the footnote number.
