What are children's book awards and why do they matter?

Children's book awards are chosen every year, mostly by librarians, to indicate "the best" children's books of the year in many award categories. The awards tell publishers, writers, and illustrators what is considered to be "the best," and thus the standards they must strive to attain. Award-winners get orders from libraries and bookstores around the country and are displayed with award stickers on their front covers.
