U.S. Census Bureau

The Census Bureau homepage offers online access to a wide array of statistics. The Census of Population & Housing, done every ten years, provides the most comprehensive and detailed data on the U.S. population. It is updated by the American Community Survey.

Census Basics

The Census Bureau has an online Glossary of terms. It is useful to know the Census Bureau's definitions of terms when viewing Census statistics.

Definition of foreign born:

  • The U.S. Census Bureau uses the term foreign born to refer to anyone who is not a U.S. citizen at birth. This includes naturalized U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (immigrants), temporary migrants (such as foreign students), humanitarian migrants (such as refugees and asylees), and unauthorized migrants.
