Course Objectives

The primary purpose of this course is for students to develop an understanding of the relation between physical activity and health.  At the end of the course, each student should be able to:

  • Explain the relationships between physical activity/exercise and major chronic diseases.
  • Evaluate physical inactivity as a public health problem.
  • Explain the major terms used to describe and evaluate PA and physical fitness.
  • Understand scientific approaches to investigating physical activity’s role in the prevention of morbidity and mortality.
  • List key epidemiological studies of physical activity and mortality and discuss their contribution to our understanding of physical activity and public health.
  • Understand the current recommendations for PA and accurately discuss their benefits and limitations.
