Using Ebook Central in Accessibility Mode

The usual display of Ebook Central books (when reading them online in the Ebook reader) is not screen-readable.

Ebook Central offers a special screen-readable “accessibility” mode for use with text-to-speech screen readers, such as JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver.

Ebook Central “accessibility” mode is supported on computers (both desktop and laptop), but not on tablets or mobile devices.

Please email the Reference Department at library.reference@umb.edu for more information on the ebrary accessibility mode.

Turning on Accessibility Mode

There are two ways to activate this special screen-readable “accessibility” mode:

First method is if you are running a text-to-speech screen reader, simply have it ‘read’ the banner at the top of the Ebook Central page.  It will ‘read’ the option of displaying the book’s content in screen-readable-text mode.

Second method is to contact ebooksupport@proquest.com to request that accessibility mode be enabled.  Then once you sign in to your personal Ebook Central account, the books will display in screen-readable-text mode. For the UMass Boston community, your sign in is your UMass Boston email and password.
