Module 2: Finding Books

How do I know if the books are print or electronic?

Like all libraries today, Healey Library purchases books in both print (physical books) and in electronic format.

Print Books

Here's part of the record for the book, The Grapes of Wrath

Grapes of Wrath record in library main stacks

  • The book shows it is Available and should be on the shelf when you go to retrieve it.  To save yourself time, always be sure to note of the status of a book. It may say, 'checked out' or 'not available' because someone has borrowed the book.
  • Each catalog record notes the location of an item.  In this case, Main Stacks which means this book is shelved in the library's circulating collection.  In other words, you may borrow (check out) any book located in the Main Stacks.
  • The combination of letters and numbers are the book's Call Number, which is like an address for the book. You'll need the entire "address" to locate this exact book in the library's Main Stacks.

Electronic Books

Here is part of the record for one of the library's ebooks. It contains a link to Online Access Available, which shows that it is an ebook.

Remember!  If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to login with your campus username and password.
